Institute Team Biographies
Leigh W. Jerome, Ph.D. - President & CEO

Dr. Jerome is the President and CEO of the Institute for Triple Helix Innovation, in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Institute is a federally funded non-profit organization whose mission is to "Enable the nation to realize collaborative potential for economic growth, efficiency and innovation".
Dr. Jerome is a clinical psychologist with roots in both research and practice. She is a Past-President of Hawaii Psychological Association and has worked in a variety of leadership capacities with the American Psychological Association, the World Health Organization and the National Institutes of Health � regarding technology, telehealth and using information and communication technologies to facilitate collaboration and global eHealth. She was recently appointed by Governor Lingle to the Hawaii Innovation Council.
Dr. Jerome's areas of expertise include novel eHealth technology applications; transformative learning; empathy; mind-body integration; sensors, virtual environments, social networks, multi-media technologies; communities of practice; and, the synthesis of healthcare, technology, science and the arts.
Her work has led to the development of theories and solutions for leveraging collaborative relationships, cross-cutting models of knowledge exchange and advancing and innovation within networks and community of practice; and, to the development of the Institute for Triple Helix Innovation which aims to harness and leverage the complementary expertise of academia, industry and government to facilitate new systems for innovation and novel collaborative processes that increase efficiencies, decrease costs, create new market opportunities and yield greater trust, productivity, transparency and social development.
Bernice Bowers - Global Initiatives Testbed Coordinator

Bernice Bowers has held positions in government, business, and non-profit economic development organizations in Hawaii and Asia. She served as Executive Director of the Oahu Economic Development Board; Administrator of HR & Strategic Planning of Motorola in Japan; Director of Japan Programs sponsored by Toyota Motor Corporation at the University of Kentucky; Special Projects Manager of the Pacific Basin Economic Council; and most recently as Business Integration Manager of Servco Pacific Inc. She co-founded The Northeast Asia Forum, a disaster management and humanitarian assistance training organization primarily serving Korea with Yonsei University, Ehwa University, Red Cross Nursing College, and the National Emergency Management Agency with support from the US Federal Emergency Management Agency, Center of Excellence in Disaster Management & Humanitarian Assistance, and the AKAMAI Telemedicine Project at Tripler Regional Medical Center. A Punahou School graduate, she holds a B.A. with honors from Princeton University in East Asian Studies.
Vincent Kimura - Asia Pacific Initiative Manager

Vincent Kimura joins the institute after having recently worked as Director of Communications for the Pacific Basin Economic Council, the oldest independent C-level business organization in the Asia Pacific, at their headquarters in Hong Kong. In addition he worked for a number of years for KPMG Consulting�s Asia Pacific regional headquarters - providing CRM and BPO solutions to clients and the company�s executive management. Vincent has lived and worked in Asia Pacific for over 13 years and will start his engagement with the Institute researching Triple Helix Innovation in China.
John Hustleby - TATRC Initiative Research Manager

John Hustleby brings a diverse background in industry and the military to the Institute for Triple Helix Innovation. He has held a variety of engineering and sales and marketing positions in industry. As a civil affairs officer in the Army Reserve, he has deployed multiple times in support of the Global war on Terrorism specializing in humanitarian assistance missions in Iraq and the Horn of Africa. He is a 1981 graduate of the United States Military Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree.
Viil Lid - Communication Manager

Viil is currently pursuing an interdisciplinary PhD degree in Communication and Information Science at the University of Hawai�i, where her research interests include human computer interaction, intercultural communication, computer supported collaboration, and online communities. Previous to joining the Institute she worked at Laboratory for Interactive Learning Technologies at the University of Hawaii, where she designed and developed Collaborative Technologies, and facilitated the growth of multiple virtual Communities of Practice. She holds a Master degree in Information Science from Bergen University in Norway, and has extensive experience in user centered design, information systems development, and TV broadcasting. Through years of living abroad in various countries she has developed an appreciation for languages and global issues.
Ray Culver - Project Manager

Mr. Culver has held Project Manager positions in project management, marketing, technology training and financial analysis in the private sector for the past 12 years and is pursuing his Project Manager Professional (PMP) certification, the highest level of professional certification offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI). With specializations in project planning, vendor management, intranet design, development, deployment and integration, Ray has led online banking, extensive network platform initiatives and web authoring projects. In addition, his experience with Bristol-Myers Squibb as a financial analyst involved in the Global Anti-Infectives product line and experience in their Worldwide Medicines Groups provides the Institute with background in global health from an industry perspective. His experience developing training materials at Motorola for technology training also adds to the Instituteâs capabilities in presenting methodology in training packets and formats.
Shawn Drost - Web Architect

Shawn Drost studied computer science and neuroscience at the University of Southern California. His previous projects include XM, a human-to-software-agent communication protocol developed with the support of Google and Quantum Leap Interactive, and Global Artisan Advancement, an startup nonprofit designed to provide online sales and shipping infrastructure to third-world artisans. He joins us to develop and manage the institute's online collaboration platform. His interests include next-generation internet tools and user interface design.
Rachel M.V. Wagoner - Digital Media & Design Producer

Rachel Wagoner is a Digital Media & Design Producer for The Institute for Triple Helix Innovation. She is currently attending the University of Southern California for her Masters in Communication Management, focusing on Online Communities. She has a B.S. in Computer Engineering and Minor in Digital Arts from the University of California, Irvine. As a Software Support Engineer for MeridianLink Inc., she analyzed failed requests, error messages, and inconsistencies in returned software data. She also verified and ran beta testing for new features, interfaces, and software fixes. As a Consultant for NACS � Network & Academic Computing Services, she provided campuswide support configuring and maintaining email clients, online educational and communicational tools, and network connections. As an IT Manager Assistant for Standard Data Resources she researched computer components online to produce valid spec sheets as well as perform database and website maintenance.
Laurel King, MBA - NSF Research Project Manager / Co-Investigator

Laurel King is the research project manager and co-investigator of an NSF sponsored grant to study the innovative potential of virtual networks. Previously, she coordinated research with the Institute�s interdisciplinary Community of Practice. Before joining the Institute, she directed alumni relations for the Shidler College of Business at the University of Hawaii. She also has experience teaching business ethics, which furthered her understanding of communication and stakeholder management. Prior to this, she served as managing director of the Academy of International Business, an international academic association. She lived in Asia for several years and is fluent in Japanese. Her research interests include human computer interaction, augmented cognition, and collaboration. She is currently ABD in Communication and Information Sciences at the University of Hawaii and plans to finish her degree in 2008. Her dissertation research investigates the relationship between visual and verbal information preferences and problem representation in analytical reasoning tasks using eye tracking and other performance measures.
Patricia J. Jordan, Ph.D. - Research Methodologist

Dr. Jordan holds a Ph.D. in experimental psychology from the University of Rhode Island. She trained for four years at the Cancer Prevention Research Center in Kingston, RI with Dr. James Prochaska, originator of the transtheoretical model of behavior change, and Drs. Wayne Velicer, Joseph Rossi, and Lisa Harlow, all members of the prestigious Society of Multivariate Experimental Psychology. Since 1999, Dr. Jordan has published in the behavior areas of eating disorders, physical activity/exercise, smoking cessation, group performance, organ donation, persuasive technologies, and transdisciplinary research. She also has experience with intervention development, web-based data collection, and has pioneered measurement development work in the area of eating disorders by applying the TTM to both anorexia and bulimia. Dr. Jordan�s expertise also includes more than 15 years� experience in the fields of advertising, public relations and marketing for the private, public and non-profit sectors. In addition to her role as a research methodologist and grantwriter with the Pacific Telehealth & Technology Hui, she is a social marketing consultant and a psychology instructor for the University of Hawai�i at Manoa.
